CFP for Public Engagement with Science: Defining and Measuring Success Conference

Sep. 10-12, 2020 @ Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI

Deadline for Submissions:  March 1 deadline extended to March 16, 2020
Notifications of acceptance by April 15, 2020

How should the public engage with science? What should count as successful engagement?  As modes of public engagement with science have proliferated, and the deficit model of science communication has come under heavy critique, the question of how to structure constructive public engagement with science has become increasingly pressing. This conference will explore the forms of public engagement with science across volunteer, stakeholder, representative sample, community, and cross-boundary modes of engagement, with an eye towards defining and measuring success for such engagement.

Invited panelists from sociology, psychology, anthropology, law, communication, philosophy, history, science policy, STS, and the natural sciences will discuss their work at the interface between science and the public. Discussions will emphasize details of approaches that enable success (as defined by the speakers), as well as challenges that hinder it.

We are now accepting submissions for poster presentations on the conference theme. Posters will be displayed in the main space for the conference for the duration of the conference. Poster presenters will also give a lightning talk (5 minutes maximum) introduction to their poster for the conference attendees in a session on Friday afternoon of the conference. This will help facilitate further conversations about the posters for the remainder of the conference.

Submit a 200-300 word abstract for your poster, along with a 1-2 page CV. Advanced graduate students, post-doctoral students, and early career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply. Pending grant application approval, we hope to provide some travel funding support for poster presenters.

Send submissions to Heather Douglas, dougl239@msu.edu, in either pdf or doc format. For more information about PEwS, visit our website at https://pewsconf.wordpress.com
